Fat and outta shape, but can still shoot!

Late last night Assani got up @ 1am and a few hours later he asked if I wanted to hit the gym with him and go shoot some hoops. So @ 445am we head over to 24 Hour Fitness and I think I surprised him how well this 'old man' can shoot. We were just shooting around for awhile then played some HORSE. He was a shooting guard in college and can really shoot, so he said he'd shoot left handed vs me. I crush him H to HORSE. Then he shoots right handed and beats me HO to HORSE. Then back to left handed and I win again. Back to right handed and he beats me.

Now, keep in mind that I'm totally fat and out of shape. I mean, I haven't seen a gym, before this week, in over 2 years. Yeah, yeah, I let it go, no doubt. But I'm back in there trying to get my fat ass in shape.

With that in mind, after the 4th game, I was starting to lose my legs a little and Assani beat me in the 5th game. Then we played some one-on-one and he skunked me. Then we played one-on-one, just post play and he skunked me again. *sigh* The kid can play some decent defense...and the fuckers quick. But at least he wasn't just taking me to school. I was playing some decent defense, but he's just too damn quick.

*sigh* I'm old...32 years old and I'm old *sigh* x2

That's aight though...3 months from now, it's gonna be a different story. ;)

The more I learn...

I really didn't expect live play (ie. at the casino) was going to play such a prominent role when I got out here to Vegas, but lately, that's all I'm playing. It probably has something to do with the fact that I'm up over $14,000 so far this month and it's only now becoming the 7th of April. Obviously, I'm running well, but I also feel as though I'm playing my ass off and playing really really well. When those two things go hand-in-hand, it makes for a boatload of confidence. And confidence can not be understated for a poker player. And I have it in spades right now.

I thought about posting just a shitton of hands here from my last two sessions, for discussion, but let's face it...there's no discussion going on. Not to mention that I know Jeff and possibly a couple of other regs that I play with know about this here little spot of my innernets, so let's not, eh? :)

Instead, I thought I'd just ramble for a bit :)

About a week and a half ago, Assani & I were sitting in our office, talking shop, when I lamented to him about my, so far, only losing session out here in Vegas. I went over a hand with him and he pointed out that, "Bro, it's live poker...you're giving people FAR too much credit". That got me thinking. Could he be right? I have since stopped over thinking things and such and the game (live) has become so much more enjoyable and profitable. I just assumed that since people are playing deep, they were more sophisticated players. While some are obviously strong players, there are plenty of others who just don't seem to move past 0 or 1st level thinking.

So I'm sitting here tonight thinking back over my last few sessions and I can't help but think that Assani did me a world of good by making that simple little statement the other night. So as I sat here thinking of what I was going to write about, I clicked the link to my buddy, BigSug's blog (see sidebar for David Z's blog). And I couldn't help but chuckle to myself that he posted the tournament equivalent of what I was going thru in cash games. While I don't think that I'm at a world class level (yet), I do feel as though I certainly have an edge in the games I play. Yet the more that we learn about the game, the more we have to be cognizant that not everyone is on the same level that we are on, therefore, have to try to put ourselves into their head. While this can be tough to do, at times, they're the guys who pay the rent, right?

The more we learn, the more there is to still learn, eh, Dave? ;)
