Part 1 of "The Slacker"
Wow, what a slacker. Well, that's not really true. I know that you all know that life can sometimes get in the way of things and that is pretty much how things have been the last couple of weeks. Between work and actually playing cards, I really have not had much time to do much of anything else. Just ask the skirt. Funny thing is, as good as I've been running and playing, you'd think I'd immediately want to get on here and brag it up some...see, I really have been busy ;)
So, we last left our Hero when he was about to have a full weekend of poker, starting with Friday night. Well, to be honest, the weekend was really kinda blah, both in play, results, and in general. Friday really was nothing to write home about *heh* as I took home about a $60 profit.
Saturday was my first foray into the "big" game, the $5/$10 NLHE game in which there are some seriously deep pockets, not to mention be a game that Amarillo Slim himself used to play up until last year (it'd be cool if he ever started playing in there again). I got there about 230pm and the table was already full, so I sat around, watching and waiting for a seat. The place was nice, esp. for an underground card room, but the smoke was a bummer. Call me spoiled, but I kinda had gotten used to the non-smoking rooms and casinos that I frequent. The table had 4 familiar faces and 6 others that I had never seen before. I finally got to meet "Kempy". Older than Methuselah and more money than God, from what I'm told. The guy really is a trip, not to mention a relic. He and Jack (it's Jack's place) told a few stories about the "old days" back when they used to play with Slim all the time yadda yadda. It was worth the price of admission just to hear some of the stories. Great stuff. Anyway, after about an hour or so, I got a seat and bought in for the minimum $300 which I was told was the normal buy-in for everyone until the older fellas get stuck...once they do, watch out. Time to Gamboooooooool!!!
I really didn't get much the first hour or so, which was probably for the best as I was as nervous as........well, let's just say that it took about 3 or 4 hours to relax. During those first 3 or 4 hours, I tried to bully out my old nemesis Alex (the guy who called me down with 34o and started my serious introspection about 6 weeks ago), and failed to do so. So down $600, I bought in for a final $300 and decided that enough was enough and stopped playing like a scared girl. Once I got my head out of my ass and relaxed, I started to play my game and started winning. The only memorable hand, which I'm sure will bring some discussion (I hope) is the following:
I am in the SB and after 4 callers of the $10 BB, I look down to find a sexy pair of red Kings. I'm sitting on a stack of about $500 and decided to pop it for a pot-sized raise of @ $60. The only caller is Kempy with his unmistakable southern drawl of "Eye callllll". Now he could be calling with literally any 2 cards, so I was not too concerned by his calling. The flop comes 972 all diamonds. Not exactly ideal, but I figured I still had the best hand, and if I didn't, I had outs, as I had the Kd. I went ahead and overbet the pot, I bet $250, wanting to take it down right there. You can imagine my surprise and displeasure when he just called my bet, leaving him about $90 left. The turn brings a blank and I check. Kempy goes ahead and gets the rest of it in there and I can't help but call, getting better than 7:1 on my call. We turn the cards up and you just know he had 63d for the flush. I need a diamond like you can't believe and what does the river bring? The most beautiful Ace of Diamonds ya ever saw ;) Hey, I'm allowed to draw out once in a while right?
So that hand had me up a little bit for the day, sitting on @ $1000. After a little bit longer, I'm up to about $1200 and I am thinking about leaving, heading to my regular game. As I am sitting there contemplating leaving, I get dealt a hand in which I trapped myself making a poor read for most of my stack. I don't want to go into it, I'll just make a long story short. I got my money in with the 2nd nut hand (K-high flush) and read my opponent for a set, but he had the nuts. Ain't that a bitch. It's my own fault anyway. If I am going to draw to a flush in NLHE, it damn sure should be the nut flush. Idiot. I was pissed at myself for that and after about 2 mins, decided to win my money back. I started building it back when the game got short-handed, just 4 of us. I knew that I could run over the table with aggression, so that is what I started doing. Unfortunately, the game broke before I could get much momentum and I cashed out a meager $303, for a net loss of $597. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
I then proceeded to compound that mistake by going to play in my $1/$2 PL game. Here I am stuck almost $600 and I decide to go play in a game that is for 20% the stakes I was just playing. Needless to say, I played to try and win back what I lost and proceeded to drop another $200 playing like an idiot. Serves me right, trying to do that. So I quit for the weekend down $797. Nice. All this coming the weekend before my next trip to Albuquerque. I could have turned a big loss into a decent win if only I had quit a little bit earlier. Well, I promise you that this was a lesson learned. I was determined to prove that the following weekend in New Mexico.
