It's a funny game...
Tonight, a few things were proven. First, no matter how good you are, no matter how much better than your opponents you may be, LUCK (or, if you prefer, short-term variance) does play a part in poker. Secondly, the second rule of poker was definitely apparent: Only play in games in which your bankroll can support (the first rule of poker, or gambling in general is NEVER, EVER risk more than you can afford to lose).
To make a long story short, I had a rough night, but in the end, it does have a silver lining. I got drawn out on 6 times, each and every time on the river, each and every time betting it hard (ie. making them pay thru the nose to make their hands, so when they caught, all 6 times, I lost a good bit of chips). When you hit stretches like this, it stings...it really does. Esp. when your bankroll is still young and developing. But, the ever present silver lining to this is a simple fact. If I am getting drawn out on often, such as nights like tonight, that means that I am getting the money in when I have the best of it. I am giving my opponents the improper odds to make calls, yet they make them, and on occasion, they hit. But, in the long run, which is what I am doing my damndest to focus on, the probablity is in my favor, as long as I am playing my "A" game. It may seem like me downplaying losing sessions, such as tonight, but I played very, very well and still was able to lose a big chunk of change. But, you know what, if I continue to play well, the long shots will not come in the majority of the time for my opponents as they did tonight. And that is what is going to pay my bills, down the road.
My bankroll can afford the stakes I am playing right now, but I can not handle a prolonged downswing, so that is why it is so important to have a large bankroll when I do this full time. In the meantime, it comes and it goes. I'm still up for August, but not nearly as much as I was.
The two most important things for me to do, now, are : 1) STAY ON IT! That is my mantra. Opponent plays poorly and wins a big hand? STAY ON IT! I hit a cold run of cards? STAY ON IT! Taking a string of bad beats? Don't chase crap hands, STAY ON IT! 2) Forget about tonight. Learn from the mistakes that I did make and then, forget about tonight. Gotta keep on keepin' on :)
